Treating the Whole Yard as One Plan, Not a List of Fixes
Most yards end up shaped by a string of small, unrelated decisions: a bed added on a whim one spring, fresh mulch the next year, a tree planted wherever there happened to be room. None of those choices is a mistake on its own, but stacked together they rarely feel like a property someone actually designed. Our landscaping work in Altadena, CA starts the other way around: we study the full lot first, then figure out where beds, plantings, and hardscape genuinely belong.
That involves reading how sunlight falls across different parts of the yard throughout the day, watching where rainwater collects and flows, noting which areas see regular foot traffic, and which are meant purely to be looked at. From there, plant choices, bed shapes, and materials follow a plan rather than getting decided piece by piece.
Designing for How the Yard Is Actually Used
A landscape that only looks good in a photo tends to unravel once real life gets involved: a shortcut worn straight through a bed, a downspout emptying right into a planting area, a walkway that turns into a puddle after rain. We plan around those realities from the start, guiding foot traffic naturally, steering water away from beds and foundations, and picking plants suited to Altadena, CA's actual conditions instead of ones that simply look nice in a catalog.
What you end up with is a lawn, planting beds, and hardscape that read as one connected space, rather than a string of separate projects added over different years.

Choosing Plants and Materials
Selections are based on what thrives in Altadena, CA's soil and climate, not just what looks appealing.
Bringing the Plan to Life
One coordinated crew installs everything, rather than the work being split across unrelated visits.
What Altadena, CA Homeowners Are Saying
Every other company we talked to jumped straight to plant suggestions. Grassroots walked the whole yard first, and the plan actually matched how we live in the space.
Water pooling by the patio had bothered us for years. It got fixed as part of the bed redesign instead of being pushed off as its own separate job.
The beds and the hardscape finally look like one property instead of things that got tacked on at different times over the years.

It varies with the size of the property, but once the plan is set, most residential jobs move through a focused installation window rather than dragging across scattered visits.
Yes. We take a look at what's already growing on the property and work healthy existing plantings into the new design wherever it makes sense.
Drainage gets checked as part of our property walk-through. If water is gathering near beds or the foundation, that gets built into the layout before any planting starts.
